Inurnment will be held June 23 for Evan Clair Alford of Eugene, who died June 2 of age-related causes. He was 87.

He was born May 3, 1913, in Brookhaven, Miss., to Samuel and Lillian Delagarza Alford. He married Opal Zeleny in Charlton County, Ga., on Dec. 29, 1946. She died in 1977. He married Linda Enbysk in Reno, Nev., on Nov. 18, 1977.

Alford earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Oregon and became a doctor of optometry at the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. He was in charge of aircraft maintenance during World War II and was a member of the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War.

He practiced optometry in Mississippi and was an English professor at Lane Community College for 12 years. Before moving to Eugene in 1965, he lived in Mississippi, Illinois, Hawaii and Texas.

His interests included jogging, golf, cooking and winemaking. He taught and played bridge at Campbell Senior Center for nine years and was a member of the Eugene Elks Lodge and the Retired Officers Club of the Emerald Empire.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Eva Alford of Springfield; and a son, John of Eugene.

The June 23 inurnment, with military honors, will be at 11 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements….
