Shirley Horton, revered wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully into the arms of her life-long companion Ralph and her grandson, Marlow on March 2, 1992.

She was born November 3, 1915 in Central, Sevier County, Utah to Ephraim LaVar and Edna Bell Bates Hooton. She married Ralph Orien Horton February 23, 1934; marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple February 23, 1963. He preceded her in death May 29, 1985.

As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in numerous leadership positions in both Relief Society and Primary. She performed volunteer services at the Jordan River LDS Temple, was a member of the DUP and had served as a chairperson for the Republican Party. During her early years of marriage, she worked as an buyer for Auerbach's, but gave up that position to become a full-time wife and mother, her greatest devotion in life.

Shirley was a woman of charm, beauty and grace, who exhibited a zest for life in her many accomplishments. She was loved and respected by her friends and colleagues in the community. A lover of the arts, she also proved her domestic skills in cooking and quilting which won her many County and State Fair awards. She developed and perfected a talent for oil painting, for which she also won awards in the Salt Lake County Fair.

She spent countless hours in genealogical research and the writing of many life stories of her family members. An avid reader, she never ceased striving for perfection and sought the beauty in all things; but Shirley's passion for life and her greatest pride were Ralph, her boys, their wives, her grandchildren and the times she spent with them at family gatherings and camp outs.

Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all whose lives she touched, but she leaves behind a legacy of beauty and love.

She and Ralph raised four sons, all of whom they proudly watched become Eagle Scouts. They, together with their wives are, Ralph Maurice (Mildred) Horton, Duane (Marjorie) Horton; Brent (Mareid) Horton and Dennis (Susan) Horton; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Forrest Hooton, Midvale; Clell Hooton, Salt Lake city; sister, Mavis Harrell, Nashville, Georgia, all of whom mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be held Friday 1:30 p.m. in the Murray 21st Ward Chapel, 6100 South 100 West. Friends may call at the Jenkins-Soffe

Mortuary, 4760 South State, Thursday from 6-8 p.m. and Friday at the Church one hour prior to service. Interment; Murray City Cemetery.
