TUESDAY JUNE 3, 2003

ELMER CLARK "SMITTY" SMITH

Elmer Clark "Smitty" Smith, age 81 a resident of Fort Scott, died Monday evening, June 2 2003 at the Mercy Health Center Emergency Room. Elmer was born July 11, 1921, in Fort Scott to Clark M. Smith and Izora Braschear Smith. He was a 1941 graduate of Fort Scott High School and then attended trade school. He married Mary Louise Jones on April 15, 1943, in Fort Scott. Elmer was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He worked for Plaza Sheet Metal until that business closed. He was a retired welding teacher and head of maintenance for Fort Scott Community College. Elmer was known for his ability to weld any type of metal. Following retirement, Elmer continued to do welding work for many individuals from his home. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. He loved his grandchildren and spending time at his lake cabin.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou, of the home; one son, Darrell Smith and wife, Sandy, Fort Scott; one daughter, Carolyn Smith, Kansas City, Missouri; and two sisters, Betty Mertz, Pittsburg, Kansas, and Alice Goodwin, Pineville, Missouri. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Heather Smith-Forsbeck, Bradley Smith, Sarah Causey, and Julie Davis, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl Smith and Cloyd Smith; and one sister, Mae Barthel.

Rev. Paul Rooks assisted by Rev. A.F. Collins and Larry Jones will conduct funeral services at 1:30 P.M. Thursday in the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Burial will be in U.S. National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post #1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials are suggested to either the Grace Baptist Tabernacle or the Elmer Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund at FSCC and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701.

ELMER C. "SMITTY" SMITH

The Revs. Paul Rooks and A.F. Collins, assisted by Larry Jones, conducted funeral services Thursday afternoon for Elmer Clark "Smitty" Smith at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Music was provided organist Shelley Rooks, vocalists Larry and Leah Jones and soloist Julie Davis.

Group attendance was represented by faculty and staff of Fort Scott Community College and members of the Wednesday morning men's prayer group.

Pallbearers were Chris Causey, Jeremy Davis, Brad Smith, Matt Forsbeck, Steve Fluty, Phillip Fluty and Matt Jones.

Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars provided military honors. Members of the color guard were Glenn Maupin, Lyal Burt, Elmer Beal, Gordon Hurst, Albert Eshelbrenner and Joe Titus. Perry Dobbins, Robert Smetana, Bill Danley and Chuck Oliverson provided flag detail. Bill Danley presented the flag to the wife, Mary Lou. Jerry A. Witt played Taps.

Burial was in the U.S. National Cemetery, Fort Scott. Services were under the direction of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott, Kan.
