Civil War Union Army Officer. He was first commissioned Captain and commander of Company B, 10th New York Volunteer Infantry on June 1, 1861. He served until he resigned on September 30, 1861. He was then commissioned Major, Field and Staff, 10th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 13, 1862, and served until he was discharged on March 6, 1862, as per Special Order 50, War Department from the Adjutant General Office.

Both New York and New Jersey Adjutant General records list his name as "Mathew Berriman".

Filed for US Army Invalid Veteran Pension, July 14, 1890 (Application #983624, Certificate #678941).

He died while an inmate at the Hampton Soldiers' Home, Hampton, Virginia.
