John Buchanan entered service as a First Lieut. in the 8th Michigan Infantry on August 12,1861.He was promoted to Captain of Co.D on Sept.1,1862 and was wounded in action during the Battle of Antietam on Sept.17,1862.On May 3,1864,he resigned his commission and was honorably discharged.He returned to Grand Rapids,where he was a gunsmith & a dentist.
