Longtime Alaska resident Audine M. Berryman, 83, died Jan. 11 at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Christian Community Church in Homer. Burial will be in the spring at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mrs. Berryman was born May 11, 1910, in Oakland, Calif., to Lillious and Arthur Martin. She graduated from San Jose College in California and enjoyed learning French and sports and always gave the extra effort needed to win, according to her family. She won championships in tennis, golf and bridge and always caught the biggest fish, they said.

She was married to Waldo "Bud" Berryman in September 1932 at the Stanford University chapel in Palo Alto, Calif.

After a 30-year career with the U.S. Army, Col. Berryman and his wife retired in Alaska. In 1964, they built their home in Homer and were pioneers in the Homer charter fishing business, mostly trolling for king salmon in Kachemak Bay.

Mrs. Berryman's lifelong desire was to be a loving wife and mother, according to her family. She always wanted to excel in everything she did.

Her family said, "Music was a joyful part of her home. She was an accomplished organist and spent many hours entertaining her loved ones, especially during the holidays. Audine will be truly missed by her loving family and friends."

Mrs. Berryman is survived by her daughters, Joan Ingram of Homer and Sally Mauldin of Columbus, Ga.; son, Jon of Homer; sister, Merlye Jean Evers of Los Angeles; sister-in-law, Alberta Martin of Atherton, Calif.; lifelong friend, Helen Lyons of San Carlos, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. Her husband died in 1991.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Hospice of Homer.

Arrangements were handled by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
