Dorman Avery was born in St. Mary's (Garner), Wake Co, NC, 4th of 10 known children (5 boys/5 girls) born to farmers, Charles Avera/Avery of St. Mary's, and his wife Nancy "Nannie". He was grandson of farmers, Lewis and Martha Avera/Avery, both born 1840 as slaves in St. Mary's (Garner-Auburn), Wake Co, NC. He is brother to Wesley Clyde Avery, buried here.

David Avera (white) was a slaveholder in the Garner area in 1860, and it is possible this family originated on his farm. The white AVERA-AVERY family has roots in North Carolina dating back to the mid-1700's and were mid-to-large sized land holders/planters in Wake and Johnston Counties. Almost all of the Avera/Averys were slave owners.

He was a veteran of World War I, having served as a Private in Co. C of the 304th Service Battalion, Quartermasters Corp.

Dorman was a tenant farmer (c. 1930) and lived on Garner Road in St. Mary's (Garner). He married Ethel (surname unknown) in 1921 and was father to two known children: Rufus (c. 1923) and Julian (c. 1927).

He died in 1966, aged 72.
