Emma Christina Horstman, daughter of Frederick and Christina Horstman, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, December 6th, 1874. She came to Appanoose county with her parents when a child, where she spent the remainder of her life. She was united in marriage to William Espy on April 27, 1893. To this union ten children were born. Two have preceded her in death, one little daughter Nina Josephine, dying in infancy, and Mrs. Florice Boyer dying fourteen years ago. Those left to mourn her passing are her companion and the following children: Mrs. Cecil O'Conner, Centerville; Mrs. Isal Irwin, Melrose; Russell of Centerville; Mrs. Wilma Whicker and Mrs. Veva Boyer, Moravia; Virgil, Earl and Delmar, Centerville. Twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren , James and John Caster. Also five brothers, William, George, Frank, Ernest, and John Horstman, and one sister, Alma White.

She had been in failing health for the last five years, but was as well as usual until a short time before her death, which occurred on the morning of October 27, 1938. She was 63 years, ten months, and 21 days of age. Mother Espy lived a beautiful Christian life, having been converted and united with the Methodist church in her young womanhood. In later years she transferred her membership to the Church of the Nazarene in Centerville, Iowa. She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

"O Mother when I think of thee
'Tis but a step to Calvary.
Thy gentle hand upon my brow
Is leading me to Jesus Now"
