Former North Pole resident Joy M. Cook, 69, of Blunt, S.D., passed away April 17, 2009. Joy was born to Henry and Agnes Lahman on March 30, 1940, in Peoria, Ill. The Lahman family moved to Blunt in 1946 and Joy attended Blunt Elementary and High School, graduating in 1958. She met Robert Cook at Black Hills State College. They married on June 2, 1962, and began their 46 years together. Robert and Joy were blessed with six children and six grandchildren. Joy enjoyed reading, gardening, home projects, playing the ukulele, embroidering, cooking and taking care of her family. Joy was adventurous and spontaneous, and always up to try something new. She had a mischievous sense of humor and a fierce independent streak. She was always organizing get-togethers for families and friends for any reason or no reason at all. Everyone was welcome in her home. Joy had lived in Alaska since 1986, most recently in North Pole, and was a teacher for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Joy had a special talent for attaching nicknames to friends and family and making up songs to go with the nicknames.
With that in mind, Sweet Pea (Joy), is survived by her husband, Mountain Ox (Robert); sons, Iris (Bryan), Case-a-rah (Casey) and wife (Mrs. Cook) Kristin and Chicken (Joel); daughters, Babe (Robae) and husband (Maurice Navidad) Maury, Sis (Karae) and fiance, (Drew Baby) Drew and Prunie (Charmaree); grandchildren, Buggie (Adam), Etta Detta (Tiare), Woo (Elijah), Keano Beano (Keenan), Reece-a-Roni (Reece), and Rainbow Sherbet (Ramey); her brother, Galen Lahman; and sister, Lea Small. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Agnes Lahman; brother, Lloil "Buck" Lahman; and sisters, Fran McMullen and Fonda Harkless.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial account has been established. Please send donations c/o Joy Cook, Attn: Sharon Metzinger, Dakota State Bank, Blunt, SD 57522. Condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.feigumvanlith.com. Visitation was hosted on Tuesday, April 21, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. S.D. A funeral will be hosted at 10 a.m., today, April 22 at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Blunt.
