US Congressman. An 1889 graduate of Amherst College, he eventually took postgraduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania before travelling to Europe, where he studied at the University of Strassburg and the University of Berlin in Germany. Returning to the United States, he became an assistant editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1897 and served on the faculty of Amherst College from 1898 to 1925. In 1924, he was elected as a Republican to Congress and served from March 1925 until his death in July of that year.
