Major League Baseball Player. Born John Robert Tillman, he was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 1958 and made his major league debut in 1962. The power hitting catcher played nine seasons in the major leagues from 1962 to 1970 and had a career batting average of .232 with 79 homeruns and 282 runs batted in. He hit 14 homeruns in his rookie season but his best year came with the Red Sox in 1964 when he hit .278 with 17 homeruns and 61 runs batted in. He played briefly with the New York Yankees in the second half of the 1967 season but was then traded to the Atlanta Braves where he played his final three seasons.
