Mary Agnes Yerkes was an accomplished painter who received training at Rockford College, then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, where she also taught, and at the currently named School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was skilled in the media of oil, pastel and watercolor.
In 1917, she married Navy Commander Archibald Nelson Offley, and had one child, Mary Yerkes Offley, born the next year. As a military family, they moved from place to place for several years, and eventually chose San Mateo, California as their permanent residence. Daughter Mary died at age 15, in 1933.
During the Depression, Mrs. Offley was a prolific painter, but there was no market for art at the time, and she struggled to sell her work. She found California to be a great base for her travels to National Parks and other scenic destinations, where she did plein-air paintings. She also painted in her studio, hooked pictorial rugs, wove fabric, and carved furniture.
After Mr. Offley died in 1946, Mrs. Offley took a short break from painting, but picked it back up in the 1950s and continued working well into her nineties. She died in San Mateo at age 103.

Wife of Archibald N. Offley, CDR US NAVY, WORLD WAR II.
