Army Staff Sgt. Olaes was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a combat medic. He was killed when his patrol vehicle was ambushed by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Shkin, Afghanistan. Tony was raised in Oconee County, South Carolina and attended Seneca High School where he excelled in wrestling, track and tennis. He was a good student and popular with the other kids but after the 11th grade he wanted to join the military. In 1992, he joined the South Carolina National Guard where he earned his GED. Tony got out of the Guard in 1998 and then signed up for Army active duty in 1999. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Non commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Medical Badge, Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab. Tony was dedicated to his wife, Tammy, his three children and his community. He was a soccer coach for six years for his town of Spring Lake, North Carolina and was involved in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boxing, NASCAR, the New England Patriots football team and loved to play an occasional game of golf.
