Omar Allvord, 86, of 44 Smith St., Groton, passed away on Monday evening, April 20, 2009, at Fairview in Groton.
He was born in Williamsport, Pa., on March 3, 1923, the son of Raymond and Maude (Hill) Allvord.
Omar married Marjorie Cunningham on June 18, 1944, in Pawcatuck. Marjorie passed away March 17, 2000.
Omar served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then went to work at Electric Boat Company, retiring in 1985. After retirement he and his son, Glen, operated NEID Printing in Groton.
He was a devout member of Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Groton Open Space Association, the Groton Sportsman Club, and was a charter member of the Friends of Fort Griswold. He also served on the Groton Town Council and participated in many civic activities. In 2006 he was presented with the Patriot Award by the Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park Foundation, Inc.
He is survived by his son, Glen F. Allvord of Groton.
Besides his wife he was predeceased by his brother, Harry and his sisters, Ruth Beamer, Dorothy Hendershot, and Wanda Mulberry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Dr., Groton. Interment will be in New St. Michael's Cemetery, Pawcatuck. There are no visiting hours.
Donations in his memory may be directed to Fairview, 235 Lestertown Road, Groton CT 06340.
