THREE REDWOOD BOYS MISSING IN WAR THEATRES: ALL FLIERS, TWO THOUGHT LOST OVER EUROPE, 1 IN PACIFIC

REDWOOD CITY, May 11-Three Redwood City boys--one the pilot of a Flying Fortress, another a rear gunner of an army bomber, and the third an air crew radioman with the marine corps, are missing in action, army-navy casualty lists today revealed. They are:
STAFF SGT. ANTHONY J. NUNES, 20, USA, rear gunner on a bomber, son of Mrs. Mary Nunes of 531 Stanford avenue. He has been missing since April 9 in the European area.

OVER GERMANY
Sergeant Nunes, veteran of 18 months overseas, first in the African campaign, later in the air battle for Europe, was reported missing on a mission over Germany.
Sergeant Nunes attended San Mateo High school for nearly three years, at which time he resided with his father, Manuel Alphonso, in San Bruno. Later he transferred to Sequoia, and took the name of his stepfather, Joseph Nunes, following his mother's remarriage.
Veteran of the battle for North Africa, young Nunes was home last Thanksgiving on furlough, then was transferred to England. He was on at least two missions over Nazi Europe before his last mission, members of the family said. Nunes enlisted in the army air corps on Dec. 15, 1941--a week after Pearl Harbor. (article amended to include references to this soldier only)

Mission No. 23 Narrative, April 9, 1944, Target - Gdynia, Poland
Over three hundred bombers were sent to bomb a FW-190 aircraft plane in Gydnia, Poland. This was the longest mission that the 457th had flown to date. Because of the distance friendly fighter protection would not be available near the target. The group lost three planes to a furious fighter attack both before they hit the target and on the way home. The route was over the North Sea, across Denmark and then East across the Baltic Sea. Many planes dropped out due to extremely bad weather conditions but the weather cleared as they approached the target. The bomb run and results were good in spite of enemy fighter attacks. Flak was moderate. The 457th lost three planes to enemy action. The 8th Air Force lost 32 bombers on this mission.
Lt Parks aircraft, 42-31629, was shot down in the target area. They were hit in the cockpit area and the plane left the formation and shortly after exploded. Some crewmen were able to bail out and some were thrown out by the force of the explosion. Seven of his crew were killed and three became POW's.
