Hollis A. 'Muley' Bates
NEW LONDON - Services for Hollis A. 'Muley' Bates, 77, of New London, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel in Overton with the Rev. Atwell Hankins officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Rusk County under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home in Overton.

Mr. Bates died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in a Henderson hospital. He was born June 4, 1926, in Electra, to the late Raymond Allen 'Jack' & Jennie Florence Jackson Bates.

Mr. Bates had lived in East Texas for most of his life, worked as a driller in the East Texas oil fields and was a Baptist. He married Geneva McAdoo Nov. 20, 1948, in Overton. He was a veteran of World War II, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Commencement Bay.

Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec, 18, 2003, at the funeral home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Chase Allen Bates in 1984.

Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Geneva Bates of New London; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike & Glenda Bates of Overton, Don & Debbie Bates of New London and Larry Bates of Overton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Murt & Connie Bates of New London, Freddie & Jerry Bates of Longview and Jimmy & Joanie Bates of Henderson; seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Johnnie & Jerry Stallings of Vidalia, La., Mollie & Nubbin Fuller of Longview, Jennie Lynn & Kenneth Ballard and Patsy & Thomas Anderson, all of Houston, Dixie & Dennis Duncan of Kilgore, Charlotte & Bobby Martin of Pleasant Hill and Debbie & Randy Martin of Troup; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Clint Bates, Shawn Bates, Trevor Bates, Murt Bates, Freddie Bates and Jimmie Bates.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
