Elkanah was the son of Elijah and Polly Childris Johnson.He was born in Knox County,Tennessee on his father's farm.He married Mary Catherine Keith 7/9/1846.Of this union there was 10 children 7 boys and 3 girls.William Henry,Robert Calvin,Isaac Ferdinand,James Alexander,Charles Edward,Oliver Peasant ,John Milton, Mary Evelyn,Martha Ellen,and Liza Jane.
When first married Elkanah and Mary Catherine lived on a farm given to him by his father but later started buying land in Blount County a total of 456 acres in all in Alnwick.
Elkanah was a farmer and lumberman and owned and operated the first sawmill in Blount County.
Elkanah supplied much of the lumber to build Maryville College.
Elkanah was in Combany E. First Artillery Battalion of the Amry of the United States.He could have drawn a pension but wanted to make it on his own and never applied for one.
Elkanah donated the land and lumber for Laurel Banks Baptist Church where he and his wife are buried.
Elkanah died of stomach ulcers.
