Former Alaska resident William Arden Berquist, 75, died June 7, 1998, at his home in Kent, Wash. A local memorial service was held at Anchorage Christian Center, 639 W. International Airport Road.

Mr. Berquist was born Feb. 21, 1923, in Schafer, N.D., to Swedish immigrants Carl and Hannah Berquist. The family settled and raised wheat near Watford City, N.D., where many of his relatives live today. Mr. Berquist's mother died when he was 6 years old. He and his brother, Clarence, were raised by their father. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the China Offensive and Central Burma campaigns, and he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1946. Mr. Berquist's chosen work and lifelong interest was automotive mechanics. In the spring of 1952, he moved to Alaska and worked for Pacific Northern Airlines, followed by Western Airlines until 1986, when he retired. In 1996, Mr. Berquist and his wife, Nita, moved to Kent.

Mr. Berquist is survived by his wife, Nita; son, David; grandsons, David and Erik, all of Washington; stepmother, Dagney; sisters, Darlene and Cecelia; and brothers, Ray and Roy, all of North Dakota. Memorials are suggested in Mr. Berquist's name to Berquist Ministries International, P.O. Box 5339, Kent, WA 98064.
