Charles William Barr, 88, of Killen, Ala., passed away Friday, April 17, 2009.

Charles was born in Florence to the late William Jesse and Dossie Thompson Barr. He attended local public schools and graduated from Florence State Teachers College (UNA), where he received the Turris Fidelis Award.

He volunteered for Air Force flight training, and after receiving wings, was assigned to fly the A-20 bomber. His combat flying was in Italy, where he flew 63 missions in 1944. After World War II, he remained in the reserves and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

After the war, he joined his father in the restaurant and store equipment business. For 40 years, he operated his own business in sales and service. He was active in community organizations, including the board of directors of the First National Bank of Florence, past president of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, past president of the UNA National Alumni Association, member of UNA President's Cabinet, longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Florence and past chairman of the church administrative board, charter member and past president and commodore of Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club, longtime member and past chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and member and past president of the Florence Lions Club. He was an avid tennis player and sports enthusiast.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at First United Methodist Church of Florence, with visitation beginning two hours before the service. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle Archer Barr, and his daughter, Marsha Barr Batzer.

Survivors include his daughters, Donna Barr Morrow (Steve), of Killen, Ala., and Brenda Barr, of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Barr Batzer (Suzy), of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Emily Morrow Whittle (George), of Roswell, Ga., and Meredith Morrow McClanahan (John), of Florence, Ala.; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Barr Batzer, George Whittle, John McClanahan, Tom Rogers, Byron Bower Jr. and Greg Lewis.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the First United Methodist Church men's Bible class and Florence Lions Club, Lewis Bartmess, Byron Bower Sr. and Henry Jones.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund at First United Methodist Church, 415 Seminary St., Florence, AL 35630, or to a charity of your choice.
