In 1857, Leander went to Missouri. Then in 1860 he went to Kansas and in 1861 enlisted in Company C, 2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry (served in Civil War). He also served as 2nd Lieutenant, Company I,34th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Springfield, Missouri. Cert. 10,164 showed he suffered a wound to his left leg and received a pension of $18 a month. He returned to Shelby County, Indiana, after the war.
Married Lida Phares on December 31, 1863 or 1864. Lida born September 11, 1843; died May 16, 1926. They lived north of Liberty Church Cemetery. Leander and Lida deeded land south of their house for burial purposes to several families and the general public. This comprised or was Liberty Cemetery.
After Leander's death, Lida married Jesse Jones.
