Banker. Benjamin was the son of Albert Gallatin and Mary Ewing Jenckes Edwards. He first went to work for the St. Louis National Bank on his sixteenth birthday and then entered the employ of the Bank of Commerce as assistant correspondent clerk in 1880. With his father, who for over twenty years had been the U.S. assistant treasurer at St. Louis, he entered the stock and bank brokerage business under the firm name of A. G. Edwards & Son in 1887.
