Joseph Hall was widely known throughout Letcher County. He was a preacher and also served as postmaster at Millstone, KY for a number of years. He married six times, to five different women. His last marriage was to his fourth wife, Dianah C. Webb.
His death was something of a mystery. He died of a gunshot wound, which was ruled a suicide. Children from his early marriages have long held that the circumstances of his death made suicide almost impossible.
