Ensign E. W. Hurst, USN, was designated Naval Aviator #4150 in 1935. Graduated from U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1932.

Lieutenant Hurst was awarded two Distinguished Flying crosses in 1942. During the critical Battle of the Coral Sea, he attacked the Japanese carrier SHOHO, scoring hits which contributed to her sinking; and the following day severely damaged carrier SHOKAKU. Earlier, while flying over the uncharted Owen Stanley range, he pressed home a successful torpedo attack in the face of heavy antiaircraft fire, severely damaging enemy shipping and installations at Salamaua and Lae, New Guinea, March 10, 1942. With the aircraft carrier USS LEXINGTON (CV-2) sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea, LT Hurst flew from New Zealand until his death June 9, 1942 in a crash near Whemuapai.

The destroyer escort USS HURST (DE-250) was named in his honor.
