The remains of our first settler, Mr. Isariah Mayfield were removed from Magee (McKee) Township, where he died last winter, and was buried there owing to most impassable roads, to Beverly Cemetery and laid by the side of his wife who died many years ago. Rile Girley preached his funeral.
He was 94 years of age and settled near the center of this Township, in March, 1834, with his wife and three small children, and for six months they were the only people in the Township, their nearest neighbor being four miles west and twelve miles east of them. Their cabin being logs, fourteen feet inside and when Mr. Sykes was building his cabin on adjoining land in November, he and his help boarded with them as neighbors. Sixteen people slept in that fourteen foot cabin, in which, with small additions they raised a family of nine children.
Mr. Mayfield was raised in N.C., married in southeast Missouri, lived two years near Liberty, then on his farm here till he was too old to work, when he sold his farm and moved into our village where his wife died many years ago. Since then he lived alone or with some of his children and was at his son John's home in Magee when he died.
Ignorant of book knowledge, he was a fine type of western hunter, and for years their meat was deer and other game of which this country was full. He was a good neighbor, honorable and honest in all respects, and believing others to be the same, caused his last few years to be spent in poverty.~Beverly, Ill. paper
