Middlebury, Oct. 3. - Walter Wallace Martin, 88, past commander of the Vermont department, Grand Army of the Republic, and at one time an aide of the staff of the national commander, died at his home here at 8 o'clock this morning.
Mr. Martin served two enlistments in the Civil war with Company B, 11th Vermont regiment, from July 23 to September 1, 1862 and from March 24 to June 24, 1864.
He was also past commander of William P. Russell post, G.A.R. His death leaves one survivor of that organization.
With his wife, who is his sole survivor, he attended the national convention of the Grand Army in Portland, Me., last month.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 8 o'clock at the Methodist church with burial in the West cemetery.
