S.A. Scott, died Feb 21, 1898, aged 40 years, 9 months and 5 days

Note that the cemetery transcription indicates a death year of 1898 but the obituary was published in 1900. The photo is not clear about the year of death.

Extracted from obituary in the Wayne County Press, February 22, 1900:

Stephen A. Scott died at his home in Jeffersonville Wednesday morning of this week . . . consumption, aged about 40 years.

Moved from St. Louis a few weeks since to spend his last days at his old home. His wife has been dead for several years, but he was cared for by his mother. For several years he was employed as a street car conductor in St. Louis. Leaves two daughters, the older about 15, the youngest about twelve. Was a half brother of James Scott, of Lamard, and has one full brother, R.T. Scott, who is station agent at Marceline, Missouri. Funeral will be at Jeffersonville today . . . A.O.U.W. will have charge of the services.

Suggested edit: In regards to your notes, I would say Stephen died in 1900. The Wayne County Press of 22 Feb 1900 would have been published on Thursday, with Stephen dying the day before, Wednesday, as stated. Also, he was listed as a conductor in the 1899 St. Louis city directory, at a different address than that given in the 1895 city directory (which, by the way, matched the address given in his wife's death record). It doesn't help though that the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records pretty closely agree that Stephen was born about 1857; it would appear that he was older than 40 years when he died.

Thanks for adding these updates. I stalled out on Alice Vina and her sister, Minta Ann (Harmon) Harmon probably 20 years ago, while trying to trace out my Harmon family connections. It's also helped to dispell the myth claimed by some that Beulah and Jessie Scott, shown with Stephen's mother, Martha (Cox) Scott, in the 1900 census, were instead the daughters of Dica (Burgess) [Scott] Leathers, who died in 1898.
