Obituary
"Charles Lewis was born the youngest child of eight in the family of James R. and Sophia (Stansbury) Lewis, near Bloomington, Illinois on February 2, 1872, and passed away on July 3, 1950 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 1 day. When he was three years old, the family moved to Arkansas City, Kansas, where his parents passed away while he was yet quite young. Older brothers and sisters kept the family together and in 1906, Mr. Lewis left Arkansas City and came west where he filed on a claim 20 miles south of Holly, Colorado. In 1910 he was married to Cora Etta Lane, who preceded him in death last December 7, 1949. To this union was born one child, Charlene, now Mrs. Sigel Ross of Holly. The family remained on the homestead for the next 20 years where Mr. Lewis took a very active part in the affairs of the community and in developing his own farm. In 1925 the family moved to Holly. Shortly after this, Mr. Lewis was stricken with a bone ailment which doctors were unable to cope with and left him on crutches. He still managed to do his work about the home and was cheerful and happy. For the last six years he had been in the home of his daughter and family who had returned to Holly to care for him and his wife. ..."
According to the family, he was hit in the leg by a baseball, then developed bone cancer and had to have his leg amputated. He took part in the Cherokee Strip Land Rush, although he was not able to stake a claim. The rifle he carried in the land rush is in the possession of a grandson.
