JOHN REID ALEXANDER BRYSON KELLY
Born Troy NY December 14, 1809, Deceased Danbury, Ohio, April 18, 1883
ELIZABETH PETTIBONE KELLY
Born Newburg, Ohio, October 18, 1814, Deceased Danbury, Ohio, October 8, 1895
John Kelly moved to Sandusky, Ohio, from Troy, NY, with his family in 1819. As a young boy of 12, John helped his father, William Kelly, build both the Marblehead Lighthouse and The Keeper's House. He did not return to Sandusky, Ohio with his father, but remained on the Peninsula, becoming a prosperous fruit farmer. John Kelly was Ottawa County's State Senator before the time of the Civil War.
Elisabeth Pettibone Kelly is the granddaughter of Benajah Wolcott, first keeper of the Marblehead Light. Born in Newburg, Ohio during the War of 1812, Elizabeth was the first white child born in the Cleveland area.
On July 23, 1835, John and Elisabeth were married in The Keeper's House, the fortuitous union of the lighthouse builder's son and the lighthouse keeper's granddaughter. They are buried in a family graveyard off Hartshorn Road, located in their then extensive orchards. Their children include Ottawa County's first Common Pleas Judge, Malcolm, and William (the younger) who sponsored legislation in Columbus to finally locate the Ottawa County seat at Port Clinton settling decades of competition from the Village of Oak Harbor. The Ottawa County Historical Society and the Danbury Township Trustees will soon undertake restoration of the Kelly Cemetery.
