Charlie Mae Patterson Berkley, 78, died Nov. 22, 1998, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. No funeral services were held at the time. Memorial services were announced at a later date, and Mrs. Berkley's ashes were buried at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mrs. Berkley was born Nov. 19, 1920 in Savannah, Ga. She attended Catholic elementary school and public middle and high schools in Savannah. A veteran of the Women's Army Corps in the mid-1940s, Mrs. Berkley was a licensed cosmetologist and instructor in Oakland, Calif. and San Francisco in 1948. She moved to Anchorage in 1957 and was a civil service employee in food service at the Kenai Dining Hall on Elmendorf Air Force Base. She became a lead worker and union representative before her retirement in 1973. Mrs. Berkley was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Her other community involvements also reflected her special interests in education, minority issues, children and helping others. She was a founding member and officer in many Anchorage civic and social organizations, including Northern Lights Civic and Social Club, Cancer Society, Heart Fund, March of Dimes, NAACP, Alaska Black Women's Clubs' National Association, Alaska Black Leadership Conference, Municipal Grants Task Force and the Alaska Women's Commission. Her family says ''Thank you for the life, love, strength, knowledge and legacy you have given us all. We will see you soon.''

Mrs. Berkley is survived by her husband, Eddie L. Berkley; her children, Darryl, Eddie II, Doris McCoy, Ellen Johnson, Donna McCaskile, and Ervin. She also leaves grandchildren, Darrylena, Stacy, David, Brianna, Darryl II, Zane, Tiffany, Eddie III, Johnny'ee II, Vincent, Anthony, Candace, Jerome II, Kristyn, Blayke and Marcus; two great-grandchildren and another expected in a few months. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, Alaska Affiliate, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99503; the American Cancer Society. 1057 W.
