"Alexander DeWitt was born in the winter of 1796 in Esopus Township to Gerritt DeWitt 1760-1806 and his wife Catherine Wynkoop TenEyck 1765-1840. He is the grandson of Garret DeWitt and Blandina DuBois. He is noted as living in Hurley in 1830, but Kingston City 1840-1860, and in Creek Locks 1870. Oddly enough, he is found living alone in Poukeepsie in 1880, only 7 years before his death. If he resided there upon his death, he had his remains shipped for burial in Bloomington.

Alexander was a farmer by trade, for it is noted in 1850 that he had 55 acres in Kingston under farm, with a horse, 3 milk cows, 3 bull's or steers, 2 oxen for his wagon and plow, and 3 pigs.

He had only one wife, Maria Newkirk 1798-1867 of Hurley. She married Alexander somewhere between 1818 (her 20th birthday) and the birth of their first, a son, Gerret, in 1828, probably in Hurley. Daughter Maria followed in 1834 in Hurley; Sarah in 1838 in Kingston; Charles in 1840 in Kingston; and Blandina in 1843 in Kingston. His move to Creek Locks probably came about after his wife died in 1867, as both of the children remaining at home, Charles and Blandina, had both found their own way and moved out previously. Alexander moved in with his brother Richard E DeWitt b.1802 and his wife Eliza b.1820. Richard and Eliza had one son Charles b.1866.
