Son of David and Catherine Eddleman Pittman, grandson of John and Elizabeth Mauck Pittman, greatgrandson of Nicholas and Catherine Snapp Pittman of Virginia.

The spelling of the family surname (Pittman vs. Pitman) varies from one individual to another among the descendants of Nicholas and Catherine Pittman. James apparently favored "Pitman" even though his father David favored "Pittman".

James' death date inscription conflicts with the fact that he was listed in the 1880 Federal Census in June:

Harrison Co. (IN) 1880 Federal Census (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/45708455%3A6742), Dig. img. 33; 28 June, Harrison Twp.

James Pitman [sic] (age 51, farming), wife Sarah (age 54), dau Mary C. (age 29), dau Frances E. (age 21), son-inlaw Luther M. Stover (age 21, farm labor), wife Susana B. Stover (age 20), dau Alvira D. (age 14), and Amos S. Conrad (age 14, "bound", laborer). All were born in Indiana except for Luther Stover (Missouri).
