Neal B. Morrison, 87, of 25771 County Route 192, died Sunday morning April 12, 2009 at River Hospital, Alexandria Bay, after a short illness.
Mr. Morrison was a welder in the shipyards in Newport News, Va., and in the steel mills of Gary, Ind., before moving to Hammond. He owned and operated a dairy farm on Calaboga Road, Hammond, for more than 33 years.
Born June 5, 1921, in Gaines, W.Va., the youngest son of 12 children of Calvin K. and Mattie Reed Morrison, he graduated from Marlinton (W.Va.) High School.
He married Marjorie Denner on April 15, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Morrison had served as an elder and trustee of Hammond Presbyterian Church, a board member of the Federal Land Bank and a member of the Hammond Central School Board of Education. He enjoyed old-time country music and the promotion of Appalachian culture. He was a self-taught fiddler, winning several awards in local and state contests, and was invited to play his fiddle at Grand Central Station in New York City as part of the "I Love New York" tourism campaign.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Vicki A. Curtis, Hamilton, Ohio; two sons, John N., Hammond, and Wayne, Pittsburgh, Pa., three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
A graveside service will be in the summer in Fineview Cemetery, Hammond.
Arrangements are with Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay.
