HERBERT JOHN ALLEN: MAY 2, 1949 - NOV. 20, 1993

Many times it would have been easier to give up, but John never did. He endured to the end with hope and dignity and a sense of humor.

Born May 2, 1949 to Herbert J. and Vilate Allen. He was the second of six children and the first son. He grew up in a loving family and leaves his brothers, Dale (and Barb), Paul (and MaryJane), Glen (and Tawna), and his sisters, Audrey and Karen (and Kim) Davis.

One of the things he loved doing most as a kid was going fishing with his dad and his grandpa "H.L." He grew up in Murray, Utah where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated from Murray High in 1966.

On June 10, 1971, just a few days after graduating from Westminster College, John married his best friend and love, Sheri Smith, daughter of Ron and Marilyn Smith. They were married for over 22 years, enjoying their life together to the fullest. Everything they did they did together, including running the St. George marathon in 1986. They loved the outdoors where they could camp, hike, bike and John's favorite, ski. But the greatest joy of their lives is their two sons, Jesse and Isaac. There was nothing on this earth John loved more than his boys; they truly meant the world to him.

In 1971 John began his teaching career at Butler Middle School. He was truly a gifted teacher who could teach any subject. Over the years he taught English, history, science, P.E., and his best subject, math. He knew how to reach kids that others might give up on and every year he had more kids request his class than any other. He taught at Union Middle School, South Summit, Mt. Jordan, Joel B. Jensen, and returned three years ago to Butler.

John had a blessed life. He was a very remarkable person: strong, brave, wise and loyal. Although he was a quiet and private man, those fortunate to know him loved him dearly and he leaves many special friends.

Sheri, Jess and Ike would like to thank all the kind and loving friends and family who supported them through John's illness. We request that you not send flowers as they seem more appropriate for birthdays and anniversaries.

You may make a contribution to the American Cancer Society in John's name so that someday soon no one else will have to suffer this terrible disease.

At John's request, there will be no viewing; and to be honest, he would have liked to forego the funeral altogether. But family and friends need the chance to say "goodbye" so there will be a short tribute to John on Wednesday, November 24 at 4 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, where John's family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, 12 noon at the Murray City Cemetery.

"You are the wind beneath my wings."
