Machinist Mate 2nd Class Johnson was aboard the USS Oahu when she was sunk by the Japanese at Correigdor, Philippines, May 5, 1942. He was taken as a prisoner of war to the Mukden prisoner of war camp in Mongolia, where he died of dysentery and beri-beri.
