FORMER SHERIFF BILL MILLER DIES AT ST. CLAIR

H. Bill Miller, who serves as sheriff longer than anyone in the history of Franklin County, died on Sunday, October 20, at his home in rural St. Clair.
He was 80.
Mr. Miller was known as a tough sheriff from the "old school" who believed in stiff punishment for criminals, and he ran his Franklin County sheriff's office that way for 24 years. But he had a reputation for fiarness and honesty as well.
Mr. Miller was first elected sheriff in 1952 and held that office for 20 years before losing to deputy, Don Schroeder, in 1972. Four years later he ran again and defeated Schroeder by more than 3,000 votes.
During the four years he was not sheriff, he served one two-year term as an associate judge of the county court, now called the county commission.
Early in 1980, he announced his retirement from the sheriff's office. Mr. Miller lived on a farm on Highway 47, south of Highway 30, for the last 29 years.
He remained active in county politics and was named Democrat of the Year by his party in 1990.
Mr. Miller married Marvella Claypool, a school teacher, on June 29, 1963. She was an unpaid assistant to him until his retirement.
In 1935, he built and later operated Washington Motor Company, on the southeast corner of Fifth and Elm Streets in Washington.
He lived in Washingtonand later St. Clair, operating the 7-Up distributorship in Franklin County before entering the Army Air Force during World War II.
Mr. Miller was a waist gunneron a B-17 bomber and later spent 34 months as a prisoner of war in Stalag 17B.
Full military burial for Mr. Miller was last Thursday in the Mount Hope Cemetery in St. Clair.
