Herschel Bermann (Harry -1872), husband to Chana or Hannah (sp?) Kaplan (Anna -1874).
Father to Scheil (Simon -1892), Meier (Meyer -1896), Schmuel (Samunel -1899), Moische (Morris - 1900), Ida B. (1908), and Phillip Berman (1909).
Son to Yussel Bermann (Joseph -abt. 1852), and Gittel [?] (Gertrude -abt. 1852).
Brother to Reisel Bermann (1887), and others unknown but not forgotten.
===============================
Herschel Bermann was born in Dubrovista, (Dombrovitza), Lutsk, Volhynia, Russian Empire, (now part of the Ukraine).
Sometime after 1900 and before May 1906, Herschel begins a path of emigration from his home in Dombrovitza to America.
What route he took, and/or if he traveled with others is unknown, but by 1906 he is living in Baltimore with a goal of working / saving money to sponsor his family's passage to America.
Later, his wife, his four (4) young sons, and a youthful sister arrive to Baltimore, MD, on 31 May 1906. Eventually they would settle in nearby Washington DC, (Georgetown neighborhood).
NOTE: Herschel's (and others) given name are anglicized after immigration, (from yiddish to english). HERSCHEL BERMANN is now known as HARRY BERMAN.
Between 1880 and 1924, a million and a half eastern European Jews came to the United States in search of economic opportunities and religious freedom. Arriving from ports in New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and other eastern cities, thousands settled in the Washington area, encouraged to try their luck in the burgeoning local economy by family members and LANDSLAYT (fellow townspeople from Eastern Europe). Of these, several hundred opened small "mom and pop" grocery stores.
In Washington DC, Harry and Anna Berman open the first of many grocery and candy stores that would be owned and operated by family for mutiple generations.
In turn, each son would begin his own little business, a candy and newpapers (cigarettes /cigars) store at first, with little overhead (no groceries), and where the "profits were in the pennies". Later, an expansion or trade up to a green grocery store.
