Caroline was a daughter of Dudley Mayes and Elizabeth Daniels. She married James Fugat McCarty on 18 Oct. 1831 in Grainger County, TN. They would move to Jefferson County, MO in the early 1830's and lived their life there.

Her maiden name was either Caroline Sytha Mayes or Sytha Caroline Mayes. I have seen three variant spellings of the name, Sytha, Sitha and Setha. In her father's, Dudley Mayes, Will her name is Sytha Caroline McCarty. Some people see a c before the y, this is a matter of interpretation and I don't see it. On her marriage certificate it's Caroline Sitha Mays, on her headstone it's Caroline S. McCarty and she is Setha C. McCarty in the 1850 census of Jefferson County, MO. The e in Setha looks like an I without a dot to me and leaves me to believe the name is like the name Brian/Bryan were both spellings are correct. She is commonly known as Caroline Letha, this names comes from a book of transcribed marriages for Grainger County, TN and is transcribed wrong. If you look at the marriage certificate it's clearly Sitha with a dotted I and a crossed T, the a is hard to read in the online copy because of a diagonal line that looks like part of the letter. I have chosen the order of Caroline Sytha because it is used more often and the order her family used.
