Obituary
Elisha Samuel Brown was born in Jackson County, Indiana, on June 2, 1874, and passed away at St. Joseph, Mo., Friday, Feb. 8, 1918, aged 43 years, 8 months and 6 days.

He came to the vicinity of Blockton about 26 years ago. He was united in marriage to Belle Drake July 7, 1897. To this union six children were born, all of whom are living—three sons, Oral, Cecil and Gerrel and three daughters, Osle, Dorris and Vincel.

Mr. Brown was as well known as any man in Blockton, being the blacksmith of the town and doing work for people far and near. For many years Mr. Brown was chief of the local volunteer fire company. Possessing great strength and a knowledge as to how to utilize that strength to the greatest advantage he was a friend in need on a great many occasions, his time and help being freely given.

During the meetings held by Evangelists Burch and Turner last year Mr. Brown went forward and united with the Christian church and was faithful until death.

The deceased was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

A few weeks ago it became necessary for him to submit to an operation, which was fairly successful, but he had not fully recovered. On Sunday morning, Feb. 3, he was taken suddenly with appendicitis and was taken to a hospital at St. Joseph the same afternoon. All that medical skill could do was done but it was too late. He suffered intensely but was conscious almost until the last. He realized that the end was near and said he was ready to go. He passed away about noon, Friday, the 8th.

Besides the immediate family four brothers and four sisters are left. The brothers, J. [acob] E. [rasmus] of Blockton, and Fred, of Melbourne, were present at the funeral service; J. [ames] A. [nthony], of Cedar Falls, arrived too late for the service, and D. [avid] F. [ranklin], of Bedford, Indiana, was unable to be present. The four sisters were present: Mrs. Sarah [Ann] Scott and Mrs. Pearl Tharp, of Maloy; Mrs. Emma Swearingen, of Red Oak, and Mrs. Maude [Alice] Bean, of Lake Side, Nebraska.

The family have the sympathy of the entire community in this their sad hour of bereavement.

The funeral services were held at the Blockton Christian church, Sunday and was attended by a very large concourse of people. The funeral sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. Jas. T. Nichols, and Evangelist Millard sang the songs he loved. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
