When Michael arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Michael died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire, during an engagement against hostile forces while on a combat patrol near Con Thien.
