Sterling A. Chambers, 95, of the Solway community in Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 1985, at Park West Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Scott County, he was the son of the late Rev. Marion and Rachel Lay Chambers and was the last direct survivor of the original pioneer family. He was a veteran of World War I, a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and had taught in the Scott County School System for over 25 years before retiring in 1960. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Capital Hill and was ordained a deacon in 1928. Survivors include his wife, Loma Strunk Chambers; sons: Tyrus, Donald, and James Chambers, all of Knoxville, Fondee Chambers of Toledo, O., and Bryon Chambers of Cincinnati, O.; daughters: Mrs. Eugene Sharpe of LaFollette, Mrs. Dennis Baird of Pittsburg, Pa., and Mrs. Vernon Taylor of Cincinnati, O.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 8:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with Elmer Russell officiating. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge was in charge of arrangements. (Source: The Scott County News, 9 May 1985, p12)
