Maggie was the daughter of Sarah "Sallie" Cooper and William Manuel Dale. Her mother and stepfather Albert Nichols raised her. She was born in Cades Cove, then later moved to the Calderwood/Chilhowee area. She married John Wiley "Johnny Clay" Birchfield and they had two children: Amanda Lee and Clifford Albert. In 1911 she had a son named Fred Edward by an unknown Price from PA. She and Johnny divorced after Amanda Lee was born. The cause of her death was "milksick fever". Her children were very young, so her parents kept them for several years. Because she and Johnny divorced and he remarried, her parents insisted on Clifford and Fred going by the surname of Nichols, which they kept the rest of their lives.
