Worthy of Mention
Among the few aged couple of this county, are "Uncle" John Arrowsmith and wife.  He was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, near Bull Run, April 19th, 1811.  He was united in marriage with Catharine Trout in Ohio, November 9th, 1837.  She was born in Ohio, September 26th, 1814.  Together, they came to this county, October 7th, 1841, where they have since continued to reside, two miles south-west of Odin. They have seven living children, the oldest being 52 years of age.  They are as follows:  Albert, who resides at Bement, Illinois, a railroad engineer there; Landon, who is at present, in Montana; William, Arthur, Milton and Melvin, and Mrs. Sarah C. Deadmond, the five last named residing near the old homestead, in this county. These children, have rather reversed the order of their parents.  Arthur, Milton and Albert each have but one boy, but several girls; William, only having but one girl and several boys.  Landon is a confirmed bachelor, and as he is nearing the 50th mile post, he will probably never take unto himself a wife.  In all this County, there is not a more honest or finer old gentleman, than "Uncle" John, and he and wife have brought up their children in the way they should go.  The DEMOCRAT greets them all with "fraternal regards."

JOHN ARROWSMITH AND CATHARINE TROUT Submitted by Guy Arrowsmith (now deceased), 308 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign, Illinois 61820

John and Catharine (Trout) ARROWSMITH were the first to bring the surname of ARROWSMITH to Marion County, IL. In an effort to keep the correct spelling of his name, John always spelled his surname and then pronounced it to strangers in as much as he had been issued a tax receipt in Ohio in the name of "John A. Smith".

John's maternal grandfather, James ARROWSMITH, served in the Revolutionary War and had experienced the same difficulty with his surname on the muster roll. The name was variously spelled Arrowsmith, Arrahsmith, Arresmith, Arrismith and A. Smith. James had enlisted 23 Feb 1776 from either Fauquier or Stafford County, VA, for two years under Capt. William Washington, 3rd Virginia Regiment. He was wounded at Reding (sic). He received a pension under Warrant No. 5643 (3590-Levina), in the name of James A. Smith. James married Levina HEFLIN in Stafford County when he came home on furlough on the 7th day of February 1782. James was also a soldier in the Continental Line for three years and his heirs were allowed bounty land from the state of Virginia under Warrant No. 8731. James, who was born about 1748, died 28 Jan, 1829 (27 Jan, 1828-Burgess).

Some say John ARROWSMITH, grandson of the above James, ran away from home; others say he started out to seek his fortune. Both are probably correct. John's mother, Mildred "Milly" ARROWSMITH, had married Cossum B. DAY on 26 June 1815 and he took her surname of ARROWSMITH.

John ARROWSMITH and Catharine Trout were married 9 Nov 1837 at Newark, Licking County, Ohio. John was born at Norfolk, VA, on 19 April 1811 and died 8 April 1898; Catharine TROUT was born 26 Sept 1814 in Ohio and died 20 Feb 1899. Both are buried in Deadmond cemetery in Sandoval Twp., Marion County, IL.

Catharine TROUT was the fourth daughter of Nicholas TROUT and Rebecca HAWKINS. They lived in Rockingham County, VA and were married in Shenandoah County, VA on 26 Feb 1803. Their family consisted of five daughters and four sons. Nicholas and Rebecca were in Franklin Twp., Licking County, Ohio before 11 Oct 1811, on which date they conveyed land to a Henry TROUT. The courthouse in this county burned in 1875 and most of the county records were destroyed. Nicholas was born in Virginia in 1775 and died about 1854. Rebecca was born in England and died in the early 1830's. Later Nicholas moved to Bennington Twp.

On the 14th day of May 1841, John and Catharine (TROUT) ARROWSMITH bought the NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of section 27 in Odin Twp., Marion County, IL, from Mildon DAY for $1.25 an acre. Mildon DAY had entered the W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section 27 on 9 Aug 1839 at the land office in Vandalia, IL.
