Vera Isbell Beck, daughter of John B. and Zona M. (Berry) Isbell, was born in Fort Payne, DeKalb County. On March 21, 1929, she married William Morris Beck, veteran of World War II, and Judge of the County Court of DeKalb County. Mr. Beck also served as Representative from DeKalb County in the State Legislature. She and William had three children: Frances Jo (Jagoe), William Morris Jr., and Robert Daniel.

Vera Isbell Beck was widely recognized as one of Fort Payne's most gracious ladies and outstanding civic leaders. She served as president of the Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs, was a member of the Fort Payne Dekalb County Bar Auxillary, and was co founder of Landmarks of Dekalb County. She served as volunteer with the American Red Cross, belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and was on the Alabama Sesquicentennial Commission in 1969. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Payne, where she once taught a Sunday school class. Mrs. Beck was honored in 1966 with the Rotary Rose award and was named honorary Mother of Alabama in 1969, after having received the Award of Merit presented by the Choccolocco Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1979 her home was named the WCTU Christian Home of the year. She was a graduate of DeKalb County High School, attended Judson College and graduated from Auburn University, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority.
