Painter RA RWS RI RE, film-director, illustrator, printmaker, stage designer, writer and teacher. He left Germany in 1851 with his wife and child for the United States, settling in Cleveland, Ohio, but returned to Europe and settled in Southampton in 1857. He studied at Southampton School of Art, the Munich Academy and at South Kensington Art School, where like his fellow student Luke Fildes, he was influenced by the work of Frederick Walker. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869, his famous "The Last Muster" was one of the pictures of the year in 1875. He opened his own art school in Bushey, Hertfortshire, and during the period from 1883 to 1904, he trained over 500 students. The School was very successful, and students there included Lucy Kemp-Welch, who managed the School after von Herkomer. The majority of his works are exhibited at the Bushey Museum. He was knighted by Queen Victoria, and in 1899 awarded "Pour le Mérite" by Kaiser Wilhelm II.
