Civil Rights Pioneer, Journalist, Editor. Timothy Thomas Fortune established a reputation as a civil rights activist and crusader for social justice. A former slave, he worked with other civil rights leaders (such as Booker T. Washington, Bishop Alexander Walters, Marcus Garvey) in establishing organizations to promote social justice and economic opportunities for black Americans. He founded and edited several newspapers, including the People's Advocate, the New York Globe (later named New York Age), and the New York Freeman (later named The New York Age). He published a book titled Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South. He married Carrie Smiley in 1878 and the couple raised two children in Brooklyn, New York and Red Bank, New Jersey. The family home in Red Bank has been placed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
