Betty J. Roehl died peacefully in her home on June 7, 2005. She had been a Wenatchee Valley resident for 80 years.

She was born in Olympia, WA on March 25, 1925, to Rose Martin Hawkes and William Hawkes, Sr. She moved to Wenatchee with her parents at the age of 9 months, attended Stevens Elementary School, H.B. Ellison Jr. High and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1943. She married Dick Roehl in 1946, following his discharge from the Navy. Betty's street-side Victorian garden has been enjoyed by many and photographed by Time Life Magazine. Her garden was awarded the 1998 Garden of the Year in the special garden category by the Wenatchee Garden Club and Chelan County Extension Master Gardener program.

She was also accomplished in various crafts and an excellent seamstress. Her quilts, as well as her holiday and home decor will be enjoyed for many years to come. Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee and a 30 year member of Mu Gamma Chapter of Alpha Iota Sorority. She was involved in her children's education, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls. Betty will be especially missed by her family and friends for her willingness to always lend a helping hand and her very supportive, generous and loving nature.

Betty is survived by her three children and their spouses, Stephen and Virginia Roehl of Newcastle, Janet and Kirk Thomson of Seattle, and Susan and Bob Risinger of Omak. She will be greatly missed by her precious grandchildren, Heather, Allison, Ashley, Rob, Rick, Jennifer, Kylie and Amy; as well as her adorable great-granddaughters, Courtney and Kendal. Other surviving relatives are her sister, Barbara Chambers; sisters in-law, Shirley Hawkes, Eleanor Otto, Lois Erickson, Erma Roehl; brother in-law, Sam Roehl and their families. Betty was preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband; sisters, Margaret Johnson of East Wenatchee and Pat Cassario of Magnolia, NJ; brothers Bob Hawkes of Wenatchee and Bill Hawkes of Philadelphia, PA.

Betty's family wishes to express their gratitude to Phyllis Gresham, devoted and loyal caregiver and friend. The Roehl family also sends a huge, heartfelt thank you to Betty's generous and caring neighbors, Kitty and Jim Goodwin and Liz and Dan Johnson and Home Care Services/Hospice for enabling her to spend her final days in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday June 11, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at Bett's Funeral Service with reception immediately following. Memorial donations may be made to Home Care Services/Hospice, 903 Red Apple Road, Wenatchee, WA 98801. Arrangements under the care of Bett's Funeral Service.
