Judith "Judy" Maddix Clayton, 67, of Chelsea passed away Friday, April 10, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Clayton was born in Gadsden and grew up in Steele, where she was a member of Steele United Methodist Church. She graduated from Ashville High School, Jacksonville State University, and UAB. Her adult years were spent in Attalla, where she taught first grade at Curtiston Elementary / Primary school for 30 years, having earned a Master Degree and A. A. Certification in Elementary Education. During those years at Curtiston, Mrs. Clayton was twice named Teacher of the Year within the Attalla City School system, and was among a group of five finalists vying for the title of state Teacher of the Year. She also utilized her numerous gifts to glorify God, teaching Sunday school and serving in key leadership roles within her church, First United Methodist, Attalla.
Mrs. Clayton later moved to Decatur, where she taught pre-school at Wesley Memorial United Methodist, and was very active in church ministries there. In 2006, she moved to Chelsea (Shelby County), to live with her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons. Shortly after, Judy and her family joined Columbiana United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Perry Franklin Clayton.
Mrs. Clayton is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anna (Clayton) and Robert Patterson; and grandsons, Ryan and Tyler Patterson, all of Chelsea. Other surviving family members include sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Davis, of Steele; nephews, Nathan Davis, of Rainbow City, and Randy Clayton of Rome, Ga.
Mrs. Clayton wished to express deep gratitude to the nurses at the Bruno Cancer Center, St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, and to the caring staff of Hope Hospice in Birmingham.
The family welcomes visitors from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Madison Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral will begin at 2 p.m.
Burial will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens in Huntsville.
Donations may be made in her memory to her church, Columbiana U.M.C., or to Hope Hospice of Birmingham.
