A graveside service for MSG Leonard E. Wilkerson (U.S. Army, Retired), 84, of Malakoff, will be held in Post Oak Cemetery of Malakoff.
Master Sergeant Wilkerson was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Wood County, OK.
He was the son of Clyde and Alma Wilkerson. He was a graduate of Technical High School of Dallas. On Oct. 17, 1941, he married Frances Elouise Lee of Fort Worth.
He entered the Army National Guard in Dallas on Oct. 23, 1940. He was activated to Federal Service on Nov. 25, 1940, with the "Texas" 36th Infantry Division. He served in Europe during World War II and in the Korean War and Vietnam War.
After retiring from the U.S. Army he taught Junior ROTC at Duncanville High School from 1968 to 1980. After retiring from ROTC, he drove a Malakoff school bus for more than 12 years before retiring from the school district. He was a life member of VFW Post 1837, DAV Post 31 and AMVET Post 10, and a member of American Legion Post 310.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Frances Wilkerson of Malakoff; son, Retired Major John L. Wilkerson of Orlando, FL; daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Cole of Malakoff; sisters, Lucille Strawn of Malakoff and Hazel Hunt of Malakoff; brother, Jack Wilkerson of Sun City West, AZ.
His military decorations and awards include the Bronze Star medal with cluster, Army Commendations medal with cluster, the pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon, the European Theater Ribbon with three battle stars, the Korean Service Ribbon, and the Vietnam Service Ribbon. MSG Wilkerson served in the 36th and 95th Infantry Division during World War II, the 808th AVN ENG BN in Korea, and the 10th Transportation BN in Vietnam.
