Harry (Henry) Winston Payne enlisted at Palmyra on May 10, 1861 as a Private in Co. C, 14th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. He was listed by the 14th Virginia Infantry as Henry Winston Payne. Harry was shown as present from the July/August 1861 muster roll until the November/December 1861 muster roll where he was shown as AWOL. Then, he is shown as present at the January/February muster until sick in camp on the May/June 1862 muster roll. Harry is shown as AWOL in Fluvanna County from September 17, 1862 until February 9, 1863. He was admitted to Williamsburg Episcopal Hospital on March 8, 1863 and transferred to Farmville General Hospital with pneumonia on April 12, 1863. He was again shown as AWOL on May 15, 1863. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital with an ulcerated leg on July 30, 1863 and shown at Chimborazo on August 19, 1863. Harry was detailed to the Quartermaster Department in Richmond as a shoemaker during October 1863. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital with a fever on November 14, 1863. Harry remained with the Quartermaster Department until he was shown as AWOL from June 3, 1864 through the September/October 1864 muster roll. He was paroled at Richmond on May 28, 1865.
