He married Margaret G. Shultz November 19, 1854, and fathered Maria "Nancy" (b. 09/07/55), Catharine "Kate" (b. 08/09/57), Charles Edward (b. 02/14/59), Christopher A. (b. 11/20/60), Annie Agnes (b. 02/28/62), Emma Caroline (11/02/63 - married Jacob J. Noel, 71st Il), Mary J. (b. 09/07/67 - married a Bryan), Sarah Philomena (b. 10/18/67 [?]), and John (b. 03/11/69). In 1860, he was a tinner living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Mexican War veteran, he served with Co. F, 5th U.S. Infantry, from December 18, 1848 - December 19, 1853. While he did not fight in Mexico, he received a $4.00 monthly disability pension. Despite being a pensioner, he also served in the Civil War. He enlisted in York August 27, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 12 as a private with Co. I, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, and soon promoted to corporal. Health failing him, he was sick in the hospital in York from October 1862 and broken to ranks during that time. He then transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, during which time he was variously stationed at Point Lookout, Maryland, in Washington DC, and Brattleboro, Vermont. At the last location, he discharge by surgeon's certificate location January 7, 1863. Despite his physical ailments, he also enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 1 as a musician with Co. A, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865. He is on the rosters of both regiments as "Charles," the name apparently most commonly used in addressing him, but he served as "John C. Crosta" during the Mexican War and applied for his pension using that as an alias.
